If you thought postmenopause is just a dry, downhill coast into old age, you’re not alone. What most of us were taught about menopause and postmenopause—especially the many postmenopause myths—is outdated, oversimplified, or flat-out wrong. So let’s set the record straight.

What are common postmenopause myths?
Many people think postmenopause means symptoms end, sex is over, or weight gain is guaranteed. In truth, experiences vary, and with the right support, women can thrive well beyond menopause.

Myth 1: Menopause Happens Around the Same Age for Every Woman

Truth: The average age of menopause is around 51, but it’s just that – an average. Some women hit menopause in their 40s, others not until their late 50s. Smoking, medical history, and genetics all play a role. So if your timeline looks different than your friends’, that’s okay. There’s a wide range of what’s biologically normal.

Myth 2: Once You’re in Postmenopause, the Symptoms Are Over

Truth: For some women, symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, or joint pain improve after menopause. For others, they persist or even start well into postmenopause. Some women experience hot flashes for a decade or more. The idea that symptoms magically stop once you’re ‘officially’ menopausal is simply false.

Myth 3: Menopause Automatically Ruins Your Sex Life

Truth: Hormonal changes can cause vaginal dryness, decreased libido, and slower arousal, but that doesn’t mean your sex life is over. Many women find that with the right support, such as lubricants, vaginal estrogen, and open communication, sex can be just as good, or even better. You’re not doomed to a lifetime of discomfort or disinterest.

Myth 4: HRT Is Dangerous and Should Be Avoided at All Costs

Truth: This one’s stuck around for decades thanks to fear-based headlines. But modern research shows that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be safe and effective for many women, especially those under 60 or within 10 years of menopause. It can be an effective treatment for symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disruption, and bone loss. HRT isn’t for everyone but it’s not the villain it’s often made out to be.

Myth 5: Weight Gain in Menopause Is Inevitable

Truth: Hormonal changes may shift where fat is stored (hello, menopause belly), and metabolism somewhat slows with age, but weight gain is not guaranteed. With adjustments to nutrition, movement, and sleep, many women maintain or even improve their body composition. It may take more intention than it did in your 20s, but it’s absolutely possible.

Myth 6: Your Brain Will Never Be the Same Again

Truth: Many women report brain fog, forgetfulness, or trouble focusing during menopause and postmenopause but this is usually temporary. Your brain is adjusting to a new hormonal environment. With support, sleep, and time, mental clarity can return. Dementia is not an automatic outcome of menopause.

Myth 7: You’re Too Old to Start Anything New After Menopause

Truth: This one makes me angry. Postmenopause can be a powerful time of clarity and reinvention. Women start businesses, change careers, go back to school, leave toxic relationships, and reclaim their health in this phase. Menopause is the ending of reproduction. Yes. It’s also the beginning of the rest of your life!

Myth 8: Menopause Means You’re Old.

Truth: Menopause is a midlife milestone, not a marker of decline. The average age of menopause is 51, and with women living well into their 80s, that’s more than three decades of vibrant, postmenopausal life. You are not suddenly fragile or irrelevant because your ovaries have retired.

Myth 9: Menopause Symptoms Are Limited to Hot Flashes

Truth: Hot flashes and night sweats get all the attention, but menopause isn’t a one-symptom experience. Hormonal changes can impact your sleep, mood, memory, joints, libido, and more. Some women never get hot flashes at all but struggle with brain fog or vaginal dryness. The danger of focusing only on hot flashes is that many women miss what’s really happening in their bodies and don’t get the support they need.

Bonus Myth: You Just Have to Suck It Up and Push Through

Truth: Suffering in silence is not a badge of honor. There are safe, effective treatments for most menopause and postmenopause symptoms: from lifestyle changes to prescription therapies. You deserve to feel well and be taken seriously. You don’t need to white-knuckle your way through this.

My Take

Menopause and postmenopause are not punishments. They’re part of the arc of a woman’s life. But the stigma and silence surrounding them have made too many of us feel alone, unprepared, or ashamed. That stops here.

You deserve real information, real support, and real solutions. This isn’t the end of you. It’s the beginning of a different you. One who’s wiser, stronger, and done believing bullshit!
